Accounting jobs in Nepal range from accounts assistant and tax assistant roles in local businesses to audit associate posts in CA firms and bookkeeping roles serving clients in the UK, Australia and the US. Most entry-level jobs ask for a BBS, BBA or similar commerce degree plus practical skills in Excel and accounting software. Chartered Accountancy through ICAN opens senior and audit roles. In 2026, demand for internationally skilled accountants is getting a push from ICAN’s GAIN project, which aims to make Nepal a global accounting outsourcing hub.
This guide explains the main roles, the qualifications employers expect, the software worth learning, and a step-by-step plan to get hired.
Why accounting jobs in Nepal are worth a fresh look in 2026
Three trends are shaping the market this year.
1. ICAN wants Nepal to become an accounting export hub. In January 2026 the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nepal (ICAN) launched the GAIN project (Global Accounting Initiative in Nepal). According to reports from B360 Nepal and Karobar Daily, its targets include:
- More than 50,000 jobs annually within five years
- Over 150,000 jobs within a decade
- Around Rs 80 billion through service exports over time
- Target markets: the UK, Australia, the United States and the European Union
The plan includes specialised outsourcing certification, a national talent registration system, outsourcing-focused curricula and training to international standards. ICAN’s president said it would run as a regular programme from the next fiscal year. These are goals, not results yet, but they show where the profession is heading.
2. Tech-enabled service exports are growing. The Nepal Association for Software and IT Services (NAS-IT) estimates Nepal’s IT service exports crossed about $1 billion in 2025, with roughly 100,000 people working in the sector (Kathmandu Post, February 2026). NAS-IT calls this a “best estimate” because official tracking is incomplete. Finance back-office work, such as loan data processing and bookkeeping, sits alongside software in this export story.
3. Rules abroad are creating demand. In the UK, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax began on 6 April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000, and extends to those over £30,000 from April 2027 and over £20,000 from April 2028 (GOV.UK). More digital record-keeping means more demand for bookkeepers who know cloud software. That is one reason UK firms are looking at outsourced bookkeeping from Nepal, as we explain in our guide for UK businesses outsourcing bookkeeping to Nepal.
ICAN also held its first campus placement programme for newly qualified Chartered Accountants on 20 March 2026, linking new CAs with banks, insurers, corporates, audit firms, development agencies and fintechs.

Domestic vs outsourcing accounting jobs
| Factor | Domestic accounting job | Outsourcing (international clients) |
|---|---|---|
| Rules you work with | Nepal tax law, VAT, TDS, local reporting | Client country rules (e.g. UK VAT, MTD), client policies |
| Software | Tally, Excel, IRD-listed billing software, local ERPs | Xero, QuickBooks Online, Sage, Dext, client systems |
| Working hours | Usually Nepal office hours | May overlap UK, Australian or US hours |
| Communication | Mostly Nepali, some English | Written and spoken English daily |
| Career path | Accountant → senior accountant → finance manager | Bookkeeper → senior/reviewer → team lead → client manager |
Both paths are valuable. Many accountants start domestic, then move into outsourcing once they have learned cloud software and built their English communication.
Qualifications for accounting jobs in Nepal
H3: University degrees
Most accounting job adverts ask for a commerce or management degree such as a BBS, BBA, BBM or BIM, and an MBS or MBA for senior roles. A degree shows you understand financial accounting, cost accounting, taxation and auditing. Employers still test practical skills, so a degree alone is rarely enough.
H3: Chartered Accountancy (CA) through ICAN
The CA qualification is awarded by ICAN and is the strongest credential for audit, senior finance and advisory roles. The route has three levels: CAP-I, CAP-II and CAP-III, with practical training (articleship) under a CA. According to college course listings:
- CAP-I is open to students who have completed +2, PCL, A-levels or an equivalent.
- Graduates with at least 50% in commerce, or 60% in other faculties, can apply directly for CAP-II.
Always confirm current eligibility, fees and articleship rules with ICAN directly, because they can change.
H3: International qualifications
Some Nepali students also study international qualifications such as ACCA, or explore routes such as ICAEW. These can help for multinational and outsourcing roles, but they take time and money. If you are aiming for outsourcing work, learning the client’s software and practices may get you hired sooner, with a professional qualification following later.
Skills employers look for
H3: Technical skills
- Excel: VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, pivot tables, SUMIFS, basic data cleaning
- Bookkeeping basics: double entry, ledgers, trial balance, accruals and prepayments
- Bank reconciliation: matching transactions and explaining differences
- Nepal compliance (domestic roles): VAT and TDS returns, and electronic billing through IRD-listed software where required
- Cloud software (outsourcing roles): Xero, QuickBooks Online and Sage are widely used by UK and Australian small businesses
- Month-end close: checklists, reconciliations, journals and management reports
H3: Soft skills
- Clear written English for client emails and queries
- Attention to detail and accuracy
- Confidentiality and good data-protection habits
- Time management to meet filing and reporting deadlines
- Willingness to ask questions rather than guess
H3: Skills checklist before you apply
- Can you build a pivot table and a reconciliation in Excel?
- Have you practised in at least one cloud accounting platform (many offer free trials or education access)?
- Can you explain the difference between accrual and cash accounting?
- Can you write a short, polite email asking a client for a missing receipt?
- Do you understand why client data must never be shared outside approved systems?
What do accountants earn in Nepal?
We have not quoted salary figures here because there is no single authoritative, up-to-date public dataset for accounting salaries in Nepal. Pay varies widely by employer type, city, qualification and whether the role serves international clients. To get a realistic picture:
- Compare the salary ranges shown on current listings on our job list
- Ask recruiters what range a role pays before your interview
- Read our earlier guide on average salaries by sector in Nepal (June 2026) on the E.Jobs blog for broader context
Be cautious of any website that quotes precise “average accountant salaries” without saying where the data comes from.
How to get an accounting job in Nepal: step by step
- Choose your direction. Domestic accounting, audit (CA route) or international outsourcing. Your choice decides which software and skills to prioritise.
- Fix your foundations. Revise double entry, trial balance, bank reconciliation and basic tax. Practise with real-looking sample data.
- Learn one tool deeply. Tally for many local roles; Xero or QuickBooks Online for outsourcing roles. Completing a free official certification from the software provider is a good signal.
- Build a small portfolio. For example, a reconciled sample bank statement, a month-end checklist you created, or a short Excel model. Do not use real client data.
- Write an accounting-focused CV. Put software and practical tasks near the top, with numbers where possible (“reconciled 3 bank accounts monthly”, “processed 200+ invoices a month”).
- Apply widely. Use job boards, CA firm vacancies, BPO and outsourcing companies, and recruitment agencies. Register once so recruiters can match you to roles.
- Prepare for a practical test. Many accounting interviews include an Excel test, a journal entry exercise or a reconciliation task. Practise against the clock.
- Prepare interview answers. Expect questions like “How would you handle a figure that doesn’t reconcile?” and “How do you check your work for errors?”
- Keep learning after you are hired. Progress through CA levels, an international qualification, or software certifications to move into senior or reviewer roles.
Illustrative example: Sita completed her BBS in Kathmandu and worked for a year as an accounts assistant using Tally. She then practised Xero in her evenings, earned the provider’s free certification, and built a small reconciliation portfolio. That combination helped her move into a bookkeeping role serving small UK clients, where she now works partly in UK business hours.
Mistakes that slow down your job search
- Relying on the degree alone. Employers hire for practical, tested skills.
- Listing software you cannot use. Practical tests will expose it quickly.
- Ignoring English writing. In outsourcing roles, your emails are part of the job.
- Paying for “guaranteed placement” courses. No genuine course can guarantee a job.
- Applying only through personal connections. Merit-based hiring is growing; see our guide on getting a job in Nepal on merit.
If you prefer independent work, our guide to freelancing in Nepal covers platforms and how to win first clients, including for bookkeeping services.
